Shelley Gellaty

Shelley, owner and operator of Northern Athletic Experiences, has lived north of 60 for over 15 years. Her travels have taken her from the Northwest Territories to Alaska and finally to the Yukon.

With a Bachelor's degree in exercise physiology and a minor in outdoor education, she designs vacations to highlight the best running and athletic adventures the Yukon has to offer. Therefore, it was a must for her to have a go at the first edition of the Yukon Arctic Ultra. And her effort was phenomenal. She completed the 100 miles on foot and placed 2 nd overall. In the YAU 2004 Shelley entered the 300 miles. Again she did really well. After this experience, Shelley decided to get more involved in the organisation.

Her work experience includes 19 years with national and territorial

parks in Canada. Over that same period she has worked as an exercise physiology lab technician, aerobics instructor, cross country ski guide, race organizer, fitness appraiser and coach. Her competitive pursuits have included several marathons (trail and road), triathlons, ski loppets, one Ironman, and biathlon and snowshoeing at the biennial Arctic Winter Games with several age group and overall top three placings.

Her paper credentials include: Certified Fitness Consultant with the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiologists, Level 2 Certification with the National Coaching Certification Program of Canada, Advanced Wilderness First Aid and CPR, membership with the Yukon Wilderness Tourism Association. She is a licensed Wilderness Tourism operator for the Yukon.

Anybody from Canada wanting to participate in the Yukon Arctic Ultra should contact Shelley. Everybody else who would like to exchange cold weather running experiences or ask for advise is welcome to contact her, too. Shelley's email is sgellatly@shaw.ca.
